Rocket Air Brakes

The Situation

I led a team of Northwestern students in the Midwest High Power Rocketry Competition during the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Task

This competition tasked teams in designing

an engineering payload that can slow a

rocket to an altitude 75% of an “undragged”

flight.

The Process

In development, I considered material

selection, space constraint, stress analysis,

machinability, and reliability. After three

rounds of prototyping, I finalized the design

of a four finned air-brake system to provide

the additional drag needed.

The Results

The air brakes were successfully built

after many sleepless nights, and our

team finished the competition in 6th place.
