Mitral Valve Analysis

The Situation
Often times as humans age, they will have problem with mitral valve regurgitation. As the heart beats, liquid flows in multiple directions, instead of solely in the outward direction.
The Task
During the summer of 2016, I conducted research into jets resulting from a vertical orifice and a 30° tilted orifice. By analyzing the maximum velocities in these two orifice cases, a correction factor could be determined which will allow easy calculation of flow volume for existing mitral regurgitation data.
The Process
To start, I modeled the anatomical surfaces
in MATLAB, NX, and SOLIDWORKS. I then
simulated blood flow through the multiple
mitral valve configurations in ANSYS Fluent.
The Results
From ANSYS Fluent, I synthesized velocity
and flow rate data to create a correction
factor which provides detailed fluid dynamic
data with less intrusive procedures.
